      <image:title>SLABS - Claro Walnut</image:title>
<image:caption>juglans hidsii Origin: Claro Walnut is found primarily in northern California. These ttrees can grow up to 5" or more in diameter. Claro Walnut trees are used as the root stock in California for growing English Walnut trees which produce most of the walnuts that we eat. (English Walnut trees will not grow in California soil so they need to be grafted to Claro Walnut trees.) Sometimes slabs cut from these trees produce lumber with both species of wood and an interesting graft line. Furniture made from this lumber makes a great conversation piece! Color: Claro Walnut is a little darker than American Black Walnut. The heartwood can range from a light brown to a dark chocolate brown with light and dark brown streaks. The color can sometimes have a gray, purple, or red hue. The sapwood is an off-white color. Claro often has varying degrees of burly or curly figure and its color is often beautifully variegated. Janka Hardness: 1130 (medium) Similiar in hardness to Black Walnut. Decay and Weather Resistance: Rated as very durable in regard to decay resistance. Workability: It is very easy to work with assuming the grain is straight and regular; you may have tear-out when using the planer if the grain is irregular. Claro glues, stains and finishes well. Because of the high demand and limited supply for this beautiful species it can be quite expensive especially in large sizes and long lengths. Uses: Claro Walnut is a very stable wood making it ideal for making wide Nakashima style table tops and also gun stocks. Its interesting colr variegation makes it highly sought after for making high end furniture, cabinetry, musical instruments, venner and turned items.</image:caption>

      <image:title>SLABS - Black Walnut</image:title>
<image:caption>juglans nigra Origin: Black walnut, also known as American Walnut, is found primarily in the Eastern part of the United States. Color: The heartwood is chocolate brown and occcasionally has darker sometimes purplish streaks. The sapwood is an off-white to tan color but by steaming it can be made nearly as dark as the heartwood. Janka Hardness: 1010 (medium) Is slightly harder than cherry. Decay and Weather Resistance: Rated as very durable in regard to decay resistance and is relatively resistant to fungus and insect attacks. Workability: Works easily with hand tools and has excellent machining properties. It is also very stable after being kiln-dried. Glues, stains and finishes well. It also responds well to steam bending. Uses: Because of its beautiful color, ease of workability and stability, Black Walnut is still one of the most popular American woods for furniture making. It is also widely used for gun stocks since it is lightweight and has good shock resistance. Black Walnut is also an excellent wood for turnings, veneers, cabinets and moldings.</image:caption>

      <image:title>SLABS - Hard Maple</image:title>
<image:caption>acer saccharum DESCRIPTION – Hard Maple is also called Sugar or Rock Maple. The sapwood varies from white to a creamy white color and the heartwood is light reddish brown. Pores are extremely small and not visible. Although, generally straight grained, hard maple occasionally occurs with a curly, birdseye , blister, burly or fiddleback figure. PROPERTIES – Hard Maple is heavy, averaging 3.6 pounds per board foot when kiln dried. Strong and stiff, it has high resistance to shock. Although it has large shrinkage and presents some difficulties in drying, the wood can be satisfactorily seasoned. The wood takes stain satisfactorily and is capable of a high polish. The wood turns well on a lathe, is markedly resistant to abrasive wear, and is without characteristic taste or odor. It has poor resistance to decay. USES – Because of its excellent durability hard maple is especially suited for items such as bowling alleys, dance and gym floors, cutting boards, counter tops and bar tops. It has also recently become popular for making high end baseball bats. Because most large maple logs have some type of figure they make interesting tables, headboards and bar tops. HARD MAPLE SLABS WE NORMALLY STOCK – Hard Maple trees grow quite large therefore we usually have access to slabs in up to 40” wide and often over 48”.</image:caption>

      <image:title>SLABS - White Oak</image:title>
<image:caption>quercus alba DESCRIPTION – The heartwood of white oak is light brown. It has very little sapwood that is usually an off-white to light tan color. PROPERTIES – White oak is a heavy wood, averaging 3.8 pounds per board foot when kiln dried. It is considered to be very hard and high in strength properties. The wood of the white oaks is subject to large shrinkage and seasoning must be done carefully to avoid checking and warping. Pores of the heartwood of most types of white ash are usually plugged with tyloses, a frothlike growth that makes the wood impervious to liquids. USES – Most white oak is made into lumber for flooring, furniture, general millwork, and pallets. Large amounts are used for flooring and furniture and it is a very good wood for tight barrels, kegs and casks because of the nonporous heartwood. It has long been the leading wood for the construction of ships and boats. WHITE OAK SLAB AVAILABILITY– Large White oak trees usually come from southern and western states. Because of this and the fact that it takes a long time to properly dry white oak slabs can have limited availability, especially in larger sizes.</image:caption>

      <image:title>SLABS - Red Oak</image:title>
<image:caption>quercus rubra DESCRIPTION – There is very little sapwood in red oak but when it does occur it is creamy white to light tan.. The heartwood is brown and usually has a distinctive reddish tint. PROPERTIES – The red oaks are similar to the white oaks. A major difference is that red oak, because it lacks tyloses in its pores, is extremely porous. A heavy wood, it averages 3.6 pounds per board foot when kiln-dried. The wood is hard, stiff, and has high shock resistance. Red oak undergoes large shrinkage while drying, and seasoning must be done carefully to avoid checking and warping. It is considerably above average in all machining operations except shaping USES – Most of the red oak cut in this country is converted into flooring, furniture, veneer, millwork, pallets, and agricultural implements. Considerable lumber is also used in building construction, and some is exported. The hardness and wearing qualities of red oak have made it an important flooring wood for residences. Preservative-treated red oak is used extensively for crossties, mine timbers, and fence posts. RED OAK SLABAVAILABILITY – Red Oak trees grow quite large however it is much more difficult to dry the wood from large red oak trees than normal size trees. This is because the large trees are prone to bacterial infection making the wood more prone to checking, splitting and honeycomb when dring it. Therefore red oak slabs are typically cut into 8/4 and thinner pieces.</image:caption>

      <image:title>SLABS - English Elm</image:title>
<image:caption>Ulmus procera DESCRIPTION – The sapwood is a creamy white and the heartwood is a rich golden brown with the annual rings being distinctive. USES – When properly dried, English Elm is a very stable wood making it ideal for furniture making, especially large Nakashima style tables. ENGLISH ELM SLAB AVAILABILITY – Slabs are typically available in widths up to 40” and sometime over 50”, and crotches up to 6’ wide. Lengths can come up to 16’ and sometimes up to 18’ long.    </image:caption>

      <image:title>SLABS - American Elm</image:title>
<image:caption>Ulmus Americana DESCRIPTION – American Elm is sometimes also called soft elm, gray elm or white elm. The sapwood of American Elm is fairly wide and has a grayish white color compared to the heartwood. The heartwood of this species is a light grayish brown with a reddish tinge. American Elm trees are found in eastern North America from Newfoundland to Texas. PROPERTIES – American Elm is a very heavy wood that is tough and hard to split. Therefore, even though it can be worked fairly easily it will dull tools faster than most woods. The texture is coarse but can be finished to a smooth surface. It is prone to twist and warp if not carefully dried. It has excellent bending and elasticity qualities. USES – Because American Elm is a hard, strong and bends well it is used for making baskets and hoops. It is also used in furniture making, flooring and veneer. AMERICAN ELM SLAB AVAILABILITY- American Elm trees can grow over 4’ in diameter and up to 100 ft tall. American Elm slabs are available in thicknesses up to 12/4 and up to 32” wide and sometimes over 40” wide.</image:caption>

      <image:title>SLABS - Beech</image:title>
<image:caption>Fagus Grandifolia Origin – Beech is found in the Northeast, Appalachians and Ohio-Mississippi river valleys. Color - The heartwood is a light reddish brown color with slight ray flakes along with a off-white sapwood. The grain has a fine uniform texture. Quartersawn Beech is quite attractive with a silver tone ray flake pattern. Janka Hardness – 1300 (medium) Similiar to Ash. Decay and Weather Resistance - Beech has a low resistence to decay. Workability - Beech is very hard, strong and heavy, similar to Ash in both it’s hardness and bendibility. If using hand tools it may be difficult to work with, but easy to machine. It glues, finishes and turns well. It has a tendency to split when nailed but its holding properties are excellent. It has high rate of shrinkage when dried. Uses – It is primarily used for food and liquid containers since it has no odor or taste. Because of its good wear resistance, Beech is also used for countertops and flooring. It is a popular wood for furniture, turned objects and small woodenware.</image:caption>

      <image:title>SLABS - Ash</image:title>
<image:caption>fraxinus Americana Origin – Ash is native to eastern North America and can be found primarily in hardwood forests from Nova Scotia, west to Minnesota, south to Florida and Eastern Texas. Color - The sapwood of Ash is a creamy white to light brown color. The heartwood is brown to dark brown in color, sometimes with a nice color variation. Janka Hardness - 1320 (medium) Similiar to Oak. Decay and Weather Resistance - The heartwood of Ash is rated as only slightly durable with regard to deacy and is not resistant to insect attack. Workability - Ash is a heavy wood with an average kiln dried weight of 3.4 lbs. per board foot. It is strong and stiff, and has good shock resistance. The wood of white ash is noted for its excellent bending qualities. It is fairly easy to work with and glues and finishes well. Uses – The use of ash that dwarfs all others is its utilization for handles. The wood is also used in the manufacture of furniture, where it is especially valuable for the bent part of chairs. Ash is used almost exclusively for many types of sports and athletic equipment, such as long oars and baseball bats. Ash can also be stained to look like oak and is then often called honey oak</image:caption>

      <image:title>SLABS - African Mahogany</image:title>
<image:caption>Khaya Spp. DESCRIPTION – African Mahogany is found in the West African countries of Ghana, Nigeria and Ivory Coast. The color of this wood varies from a pinkish brown to a reddish brown sometimes with a purple cast to it. It is usually not as red as South American Mahogany. When quartersawn it often has a ribbon figure to it and crotch and swirl figure is quite common. PROPERTIES – African Mahogany is fairly rot resistant and dries well with a minimum of degrade. It works well with both hand and machine tools as long as it doesn’t have an irregular grain which can cause the grain to pull while planing. It has good nailing and gluing properties and will stain evenly. USES – Is used for furniture, joinery, boat building and interior work. Is a good substitute for American mahogany due to its abundance and lower cost. AFRICAN MAHOGANY WE NORMALLY STOCK - African Mahogany trees grow up to 140’ and 6’ in diameter. We usually stock African Mahogany in 4/4 to 8/4 in both regular square edge lumber and also in wide slabs up to 42" wide.</image:caption>
